Workshops: Developing VCE Unit 4 Modelling or Problem-Solving Tasks

Independent Schools VictoriaChoose your session:

  1. May 17 9:30 – 3:30: Mathematical Methods Unit 4
  2. May 20 9:30 – 3:30: Further Mathematics Unit 4

SAC material must ensure the modelling or problem-solving tasks are genuine in nature and not just an extended collection of Examination 2 questions. Participants will be provided with a selection of modelling or problem-solving starting points that will be used throughout the day. These will act as stimulus material to initiate discussions and then provide the focus of the task questions that will be posed and explored. You will gain an overview of the of school assessed coursework in VCE Mathematics and a framework for the development of related application and modelling or problem-solving tasks. You will then develop modelling or problem-solving tasks, linking to your chosen assessment strategy.

Presenters Maths Methods:

  • Dr David Leigh-Lancaster, Mathematics Curriculum Manager at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
  • Deb Carmichael, Independent Schools Victoria

Presenter Further Maths:

  • Kevin McMenamin, Head of Mathematics Faculty at Mentone Grammar

International Data Science for Schools Project (IDSSP)

The International Data Science for Schools Project (IDSSP) is an international collaborative activity to develop a curriculum framework for pre-calculus introductory course in Data Science for the last two years of high school, and to develop a parallel framework to teach teachers how to teach such a course.  See www.idssp.org for details of the project, including the people and organizations involved.

We are now inviting public comment on the draft frameworks.  You can download the draft material here. You can provide feedback here by 31st May 2019.
